In sure and certain hope of the Resurrection we share that the Reverend Michael Patterson has gone to be with his Lord and the angels. Fr. Mike died peacefully on Monday, November 6, 2023, at the age of 75. Mike served in the Northwest Mission District since his ordination in 2010, and for the past few months as the interim pastor for St. Paul’s Lutheran Church (ELCA) in Carson City. Michael Steven Patterson was born August 27, 1948, in Concord, California to Catholic parents Robert and Dolores, and accordingly Mike was baptized in the Catholic Church on November 11, 1948, and confirmed November 10, 1960, by the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Oakland. Mike graduated from Mount Diablo High School in Concord in 1966 and thereafter enrolled at California State University, Chico, from which he graduated in 1970 with a Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communications. He moved from Chico to Nevada in 1970 and in 1996 enrolled at Sierra Nevada College, in the Masters in Education program of Master of Arts in Teaching (secondary education). After college, Mike worked in sales, for 17 years for Berberian Brothers and then eight for Pitney Bowes. In 1996, Mike had a life-focus change, once writing that he “…realized that there were more important things in life than having the biggest and best.” From 1996 up to and then a bit after his ordination in the Episcopal church, Mike worked as a teacher Washoe County, notably for many years with the I Can Do Anything Charter High School. Mike began attending St. Paul’s in Sparks, and before he pursued ordination, served as an usher, Lay Preacher, Lay Eucharistic Minister, delegate to convention, and Education for Ministry mentor. At the encouragement of the Rev. Britt Olsen, Mike pursued formation and was ordained by Bishop Dan Edwards to the transitional diaconate on July 25, 2009, and then the Sacred Order of Priests on March 27, 2010. Mike was also very active in the old diocesan LEAN (Lutheran Episcopal Advocacy in Nevada) including a stint as LEAN Director/Canon Advocate. Mike served both Episcopal and Lutheran congregations in the past few years, including Gift of Grace ELCA in Fernley and most recently St. Paul ELCA in Carson City. Mike and his beloved wife Connie met while jointly leading a confirmation class and married in 1995. Alongside Connie and many others, Mike was a leader in Dias Con Cristo and Cursillo in northern Nevada. Mike served in about every role there was in Cursillo, including Chairperson of the Community. “Give rest, O Christ, to your servant with your saints, where sorrow and pain are no more, neither sighing, but life everlasting.” |
